Constance Marten: The ‘It’ Girls’ Rice Links

Andy Gregory Walks through the roots of Constance Marten, the aristocrat’s daughter missing with her child:

Constance Marten, 35, is the granddaughter of Mary Anna Marten, a British museum trustee whose godmother was the late Queen Mother, and who owned the Critchell estate in Dorset.

Her paternal grandparents were Toby Marten, a lieutenant commander in the Royal Navy, and his wife Mary Anna, who had close ties to the royal family, attending the Brownie Pack at Buckingham Palace with Princess Margaret in her youth.

A noted archaeologist, Ms Marton was awarded an OBE in 1980 and nine years later was appointed High Sheriff of Dorset. He was also made a Trustee of the British Museum and traveled widely to aid his profession, making frequent visits to Iran and 30 trips to Russia.

The late couple and their family lived at the huge Critchell House – which has been used as the backdrop for several period dramas, including Emma starring Gwyneth Paltrow—whose ownership became the center of an infamous political scandal in the wake of World War II.

He was survived by five daughters and one son, Napier Marten, who was a page to Queen Elizabeth II. In 1996 he took a spiritual search trip to Australia, later returning to work as a tree surgeon near Critchell House.
