Congress MLA walkout in Himachal Assembly demanding CBI probe into death of former BJP MP

Members of the Congress, the opposition party in the Himachal Assembly, staged a walkout on the second day of the monsoon session here on Tuesday to protest against the Jai Ram Thakur government not ordering a CBI inquiry into an earlier alleged suicide case. BJP MP Ram Swaroop Sharma.

Sharma was found hanging in his room in New Delhi on March 17, with police later terming it a suicide.

Congress member Jagat Singh Negi said as the House proceedings began on Tuesday, his party’s MLAs have sought adjournment under Rule 67 as there was no free and fair investigation even four months after the mysterious death of a ruling party MP. Is. .

Before the question hour began, Congress MLA from Kinnaur Jagat Singh Negi said that even four months after Sharma’s death, the Delhi Police has not received the forensic and call detail report of the former MP, which is probing the matter.

“If this is the status of an inquiry into the suicide of an MP, what if a common man is involved in this case,” Negi said.

Leader of Opposition in Himachal Assembly Mukesh Agnihotri said that the people of Himachal, especially the people of Mandi constituency wanted to know the reasons behind Sharma’s alleged suicide.

There was a ruckus after Agnihotri’s speech and the BJP MLA and the Congress MLA were trying to shout at each other.

Meanwhile, Speaker Vipin Parmar urged the Congress MLAs to start Question Hour. But the Congress MLAs refused to follow the speaker’s instruction and kept raising slogans. Speaker Parmar then said that he had already rejected the adjournment motion as the issue had already been discussed in the House in the last budget session.

Amidst the uproar, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said in the House that the Crime Branch of Delhi Police is still investigating the matter. He said that he had also met Sharma’s wife and son and he did not want a CBI probe into the matter. They just wanted a speedy investigation from the Crime Branch of Delhi Police in the case.

The Chief Minister also said that a few days back Sharma’s son’s statement had appeared in some newspapers, in which he had claimed that his father could not have died by suicide. Thakur said that he has apprised the national leadership in this regard and also talked to the family members and assured them of all possible cooperation from the state government.

“We should not hamper the investigation at this stage and wait for the conclusion of the investigation as the crime branch has assured us of expedite the process,” he said.

The Congress MLAs, however, were unhappy with Thakur’s replies and started raising slogans in the House. Congress MLA Jagat Singh Negi said if the CBI probe is delayed, the evidence may be destroyed.

When the demands of the Congress members were not accepted, they all started marching towards the well of the House, from where they raised slogans. Amidst the uproar, Speaker Vipin Parmar started the Question Hour. However, after some time all the Congress MPs staged a walkout from the House.
