Christian Bale says people ‘laughed’ at the idea of a serious approach to the role of Batman

in an interview with Washington PostThe 42-year-old actor recalled how “a lot of people” laughed at him when he talked about his serious approach to Batman for “The Dark Knight” trilogy.

“I [tell people] We’re going to do like Batman, but take him seriously. I’ve had a lot of people laugh at me and say, ‘Well, that’s not going to work at all,'” Bell told the publication.

Bell debuted Bruce Wayne with “Batman Begins” in 2005 and completed the Christopher Nolan trilogy with “The Dark Knight Rises” in 2012.

The films were acclaimed—Heath Ledger posthumously won an Academy Award for his role as the Joker—and were box office hits, grossing nearly $2.5 billion globally.

“It’s wonderful to be part of a trilogy that proved those guys wrong,” Bell said. “I’m Not Sure It Kickstarted [the Marvel Cinematic Universe] But it certainly helped along the way.”

The former DC superhero will return for the upcoming film “Thor: Love and Thunder” as another comic book character – Gore the God Butcher, an MCU villain.
