Meanwhile, State Health Minister Ma Subramaniam said on Tuesday that screening centers with counseling services for COVID patients has been set up In 22 locations across Chennai. “At present there are sixteen screening centers running. A medical team has been appointed in each centre, which will counsel those who reach out to them through telephone,” he said.

The Covid care centers in the city have been informed to increase their bed capacity, the minister said, adding that two enforcement teams for each zone would strictly punish violators of the pandemic norms. Twenty more car ambulances will also be made available to transport COVID patients.

Earlier, the Chennai Corporation had engaged 1,000 volunteers to provide food and medicines to those under home quarantine, would set up telecounseling centers and increase the daily testing from 25,000 to 30,000.

“For each ward, there will be five volunteers. So there will be a total of 1,000 volunteers for 200 wards. Apart from providing services at their doorstep, they will also keep a watch on the violation of Covid-19 norms,” Subramanian said on Sunday after taking stock of the Omicron situation.
