Chairman of Russian energy giant Lukoil dies after reportedly falling out of hospital window

Ravil Maganov, the chairman of Lukoil, Russia’s second-largest oil producer and one of the few Russian companies to criticize the war in Ukraine, has died after falling out of a hospital window, Interfax reported Thursday.

The Russian news agency cited an “informed source” who said that Maganov died after falling from the sixth-floor window of Moscow’s Central Clinical Hospital. The 67-year-old oil tycoon was being treated for a heart condition, according to Russian media.

In a press release, Lukoil attributed Maganov’s death to “a severe illness.” The hospital confirmed Maganov’s passing to Russian news agency RIA Novosti, without disclosing the circumstances of his death.

At the start of the war, Lukoil had expressed “its deepest concerns about the tragic events in Ukraine,” and urging “for the soonest termination of the armed conflict.”

Maganov began working for Lukoil in 1993 and took over as chairman of the board two years ago. He’s the brother of Nail Maganov, the CEO of Tatneft, another Russian oil and gas company.

Maganov isn’t the first high-profile Russian business figure to die in mysterious circumstances this year.

Alexander Subbotin, former manager of Lukoil, died in early May. His body was found in the basement of a shaman’s house. Local news reported that Subbotin had been seeking a hangover cure and was poisoned.

Two top Gazprom executives were also found dead at the beginning of the year. Both allegedly died by suicide.

Sergey Protosenya, a Russian oligarch who formerly served as deputy chairman of gas company Novatek, was found dead by hanging in April in a villa in Spain. His wife and daughter were also found at the scene after having been stabbed to death.

Just a day after Protosenya’s death, a former Kremlin official, Vladislav Avayev, and his family were found dead with gunshot wounds in Moscow. Avayev had previously worked for Gazprombank, one of Russia’s largest banks. In both cases, the police said they had died by suicide.
