Center launches first all India survey of domestic workers

The Center on Monday launched the first all-India survey (DW) of domestic workers, which will be conducted by the Labor Bureau.

The labor ministry said the results of the survey are expected within a year.

Union Labor and Employment Minister Bhupendra Yadav, who flagged off the survey, said: “All India survey and e-shram portal will be game changers and will set new benchmarks in data driven policies.”

DWs make up a significant portion of total employment in the informal sector. However, there is a paucity of data on the magnitude of these workers and the current employment conditions.

On the occasion, Yadav also released an instruction manual along with a questionnaire for the survey, which will cover 37 States/UTs and 742 districts across the country.

The survey aims to estimate the percentage distribution of domestic workers with respect to the number and proportion of domestic workers, live-in/live-out, formal/informal employment, migrant/non-migrant, their wages and others at the national and state level. . Socio-economic characteristics.

It will also provide household estimates of live-in/live-out domestic workers and the average number of domestic workers engaged in different types of households.

The parameters of the survey include:

Household characteristics such as HH size, religion, social group, general monthly consumption expenditure, nature of the dwelling unit.

Demographic characteristics such as name, age, relationship to the head, marital status, general education level, general principal activity status, auxiliary activity status, and DW status.

In addition, it provides information on DWs such as their age of entry, social group, migrant status, vocational training/education, number of HHs served by the DW, activities carried out by them, and number of days worked, duration of work also collects. , type of remuneration and its frequency, type of contract, distance traveled, engagement as DW before and after the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on wages and job, living conditions and social security benefits received.
