CBI takes over investigation of Kanpur realtor’s death, FIR registered against 7 cops

The CBI on Tuesday registered an FIR in connection with the death of 38-year-old Kanpur-based realty Manish Gupta, who was allegedly lynched by policemen during a late night raid at a Gorakhpur hotel on September 27. The state government had recommended a CBI inquiry into the incident on October 1.

The Lucknow branch of CBI has registered an FIR against the then SHO of Ramgarh Tal, Jagat Narayan Singh, Sub-Inspector Akshay Kumar Mishra and Vijay Yadav, and four unidentified policemen.

The case has been registered on the basis of a police complaint lodged by Gupta’s wife Meenakshi on September 29 in Gorakhpur.

Ramgarh station house officer Sushil Kumar said, “So far, the special investigation team of UP Police has arrested six policemen, including the three named in the FIR.”

Gupta, a native of Kanpur’s Barra area, was allegedly attacked by policemen in his hotel room on September 27. The police allege that they had gone to the hotel in search of criminals.

While the police claimed that Gupta died after falling into the hotel room, his wife Meenakshi filed a police complaint that her husband was beaten up by the policemen after objecting to his behaviour, leading to his death.
