Dr Chandranath Adhikari of Bolpur sub-divisional hospital told reporters that the superintendent of the hospital, Dr Buddhadev Murmu, ordered him to go to Mandal’s residence for a medical examination.

The official told reporters: “I was on leave on Tuesday, but Dr Murmu called me up and asked me to go to Mandal’s residence for a medical check-up. Mandal asked me to take bed rest for 14 days I then called Dr. Murmu and told him that since I am on leave, I am not carrying my official letterhead. Dr. Murmu insisted that I should write the medical advice on plain paper.

Dr Murmu, who was on leave till August 10, said the Birbhum district administration had asked him to send a medical team to Mandal’s house. “Even though I am on leave, I am obliged to send a medical team after getting instructions from the district administration,” he told reporters.

In the absence of Dr. Murmu, the in-charge of the hospital, Deputy Superintendent of the Bolpur Sub-Division Hospital, Deependu Dutta said that he had not sent any doctor to Mandal’s house. “And I have no idea who sent them (the medical team).”

Meanwhile, the board of TMC Birbhum chairman on Wednesday dodged the CBI’s summons – the 10th in connection with the alleged scam – citing health issues, said an official of the central agency probing the case.

A senior CBI official said the TMC leader attached copies of the two prescriptions to his letter and sought two weeks’ time from the probe agency officials to appear at his city office.

He said Mandal’s counsel dropped the letter at the central agency’s office in the city on Wednesday morning.

The prescriptions submitted by Mandal are from doctors of SSKM and Bolpur hospitals.
