About two dozen people were present at the start of the protest, which organizers plan to last three days, and suspend operations overnight.

The protest is one of several in North America in support of Palestinians and against Israeli actions in Gaza.

Organizers have a list of demands that includes a demand to divest the University of Manitoba from all companies that protesters say are involved in genocide or discrimination against Palestinians.

They also want the university to suspend exchange programs with Israeli academic institutions and issue a public statement supporting Palestinian rights.

The university said it supports freedom of expression and the right to peaceful protest and that regular activities on campus are continuing as planned.
