Calgarians clear dangerous items from parks with metal detectors – Calgary | globalnews.ca

Some hard-working volunteers are busy with a special spring cleanup project around Calgary.

This is a big job and it is making the city safer for young children.

a member of calgary metal detecting club (CMDC) has started its Annual Hot Weather Cleaning Number of parks and playgrounds throughout Calgary.

CMDC members equipped with metal detectors began passing through the city’s outdoor entertainment areas on 1 April.

They have already found dozens of potentially dangerous items in parks and playgrounds covered in gravel, grass and other vegetation. Those discoveries included lighters, nails and sharp metal pieces.

“Dangerous items,” CMDC President Brett Buchan said, holding up the knife. “It was buried – very fast.”

“Quite a pair of scissors,” said CMDC member Wayne May. “So all these dangerous things are out of parks and playgrounds now. This is awesome.”

CMDC members will continue to visit Calgary’s outdoor recreation areas until the end of September, knowing they are preventing injuries.

“Even metal detecting, I’ve had metal objects myself, and I have 13 years of metal detecting experience,” Buchan said. “It’s important because kids don’t know any better – we’re always about the kids.”

CMDC members are proud that the project they started has now expanded far beyond Calgary, with annual cleanups now taking place in many other towns and cities.

“It’s now Canada-wide, coast to coast,” Buchan said. “it has begun. It’s amazing.”
