Bowman and Gillespie help Guelph Storm defeat Kitchener Rangers Globalnews.ca

The Guelph Storm got a big win today against the Kitchener Rangers.

Two days after taking the Rangers to the one drop on Friday night in Kitchener, Brayden Bowman scored twice to lead the Storm to a 6-2 victory over the Rangers on Sunday afternoon at the Sleeman Center.

Had the first goal of the game counted, Bowman would have had a hat trick in the game. Instead, it was ruled goalkeeper interference from the Storm and the goal was disallowed.

Nevertheless, Guelph jumped out to a 2–0 first period lead on goals from Valentin Zugin and Ben McFarlane. The Storm added to it early in the second period. Peyton Robinson scored 51 seconds into the period for a 3–0 Guelph lead, then Bowman got his first of two on the night to give the Storm a 4–0 lead.

“I thought we played really well (on Friday night) and fought hard until the end,” Bowman said. “We came out of trouble today and did a good job of shutting down their guys. We stuck to our plan and it worked.”

Brayden Gillespie was quick in net to stop 28 of 30 shots for Guelph. Kitchener’s Marco Constantini allowed six goals on 17 shots before being pulled in favor of Marcus Vandenberg, who made two saves.

“The team made it easy for me to block shots in key moments,” said Gillespie, who earned his eighth win of the season. “The game was not easy but he helped me a lot.”

The win gives the Storm a five-point lead over the Rangers, who are in seventh place in the Western Conference standings. Guelph sits in sixth place, one point behind the Flint Firebirds.

The Storm’s next game is this Friday night when they host the Flint Firebirds at the Sleeman Center. You can watch the game on 1460 CJOY with the pre-game show at 7:15 p.m. ET
