Binisutoy movie review: Atanu Ghosh’s film targets inner loneliness

Binisutoy movie cast: Ritwik Chakraborty, Jaya Ehsaan
Binisutoy Film Director: Atanu Ghosh
Binisutoy Movie Rating: 4 stars

Fyodor Dostoyevsky in his ‘The Brothers Karamazov’ said, “The secret of human existence is not merely to survive, but to find something to live for.” We, as human beings, strive for this “something to live for” throughout our lives. Some succeed, others barely scrape by, but the struggle continues. The world can tag a successful person if they tick all the boxes – cars, a house, a seemingly perfect and happy family – but scratch the surface and a seemingly perfect life can hide an emptiness. Is.

What is this zero? What causes this and is it possible to measure its depth? How does one get over this? Could it be bigger than the person themselves that pushes them over the edge to take a desperate, extreme step?

Atanu Ghosh’s film ‘Binisutoy’, which translates to ‘without strings attached’, deals with this void and its effect on people. It revolves around Sarbani Barua and Kajal Sarkar. Struggling with their respective lives, one day, they decide to participate in a reality show that promises them an amount of Rs 50 lakh. Strangers for each other, they meet at the venue of the reality show. They strike an immediate bond and spend the day together, only to return to their respective homes. Will they ever meet again?

However, the crux of the matter lies elsewhere, which Atanu reserves for later. This is the turning point for which you have to watch ‘Binisutoy’. More than one story corresponds to each other. Without divulging much we can say that Atanu has hit the nail on his head. Like his other films, ‘Binisutoy’ too draws heartstrings. It exposes the meaninglessness of urban life, and forces you to re-examine your own.

There are beautiful moments in the film. As shared between Kajal and her son. Like Sarbani sings Tagore’s song. Ritwik Chakraborty (Kajal) and Jaya Ehsaan (Sarbani) both are brilliant actors and deliver stellar performances in the film. Kaushik Sen and Chandreyi Ghosh are also effective. National Award winner Appu Prabhakar’s beautiful cinematography is a bonus. Devjyoti Mishra’s music adds value to the film, with Jaya rendering the Tagore song as the cherry on the cake.

Atanu’s last two films – ‘Robibar’ and ‘Mayurakhi’ – revolved around two people and their thoughts and actions. ‘Binisutoy’ is the third in the series. This is a film that feeds your soul and leaves a strangely calming feeling.
