Biden to ban travel from South Africa and seven other countries from Monday

act on the advice of Dr. Anthony Fauci and CDC, the Biden administration will restrict travel from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi.

The decision to restrict travel comes as the federal government is still trying to learn more about the new version. They need to see more sequencing, but after discussing what they’ve seen so far, officials decided to halt travel from these other countries, out of concern about what they don’t know yet.

According to a White House official, Biden was briefed today about the new coronavirus version circulating in southern Africa.

Officials, who are still learning more about the version, said the policy was implemented very carefully, as the WHO has now identified it as a type of concern.

“Our scientists and public health officials are working rapidly to learn more about this type,” an official said.

It does not apply to US citizens and lawful permanent residents. As is the case with all international travelers, they must still test negative before travelling.
