Biden says he is ‘surprised’ classified documents were found at former office

Joe Biden has claimed he was surprised that classified documents were found in a think-tank office he once used and said he and his team were collaborating on a review of what they found there. Why were

Speaking during a trip to Mexico, Mr. Biden told reporters that he took the issue of the classified documents seriously and did not know what was in them.

“We are cooperating fully with the review, which I hope will be concluded soon,” he said.

He said his lawyers “did what they should have done” when they immediately called the National Archives about the search at the Penn Biden Center offices in Washington, DC.

Mr. Biden had an office there from shortly before he left the vice presidency in 2017 until he launched his presidential campaign.

CBS News first reported that several classified documents had been discovered during Mr. Biden’s time as vice president last autumn.

Attorney General Merrick Garland has asked the US Attorney in Chicago to investigate the matter.
