Biden administration may announce diplomatic boycott of Beijing Olympics this week

The move would allow the US to send a message to China on the world stage without barring American athletes from competing. The National Security Council, which has been discussing the boycott privately, declined to comment.

President Joe Biden told reporters last month that he was the weight of a diplomatic boycott As Democratic and Republican lawmakers, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, advocated a protest against China’s human rights abuses.

A complete boycott is not expected, meaning American athletes will still be allowed to compete. The last time the US boycotted the Olympics altogether was in 1980 when former President Jimmy Carter was in office.
