Bengaluru: Gang tied children to tree, forced them to smoke; Video surfaces after six held

Two children were allegedly harassed and harassed by a gang inside a government school premises in Mahadevapura in east Bengaluru, who tied them to a tree and made them bidis. Since then a video of 11 to 13-year-olds being harassed by the gang has gone viral.

According to the police, six people, including five minors, have been arrested. “The gang used to continuously ragging and harassing children in the area. We have arrested one person named Vivek (18) and five minors,” said a senior police officer from Mahadevapura police station.

Police said the incident came to light on Saturday when one of the children went home and informed the parents about the incident and started crying.

As the video of the incident went viral, some residents complained to S Srikanth, former councilor of Devasandra ward and he approached the police.

“These horrific incidents are happening in the area and the schools are not safe. Police should immediately start patrolling near schools to prevent such incidents,” said S Srikanth Indian Express.

Bengaluru Whitefield Division Police has taken suo motu cognizance. Whitefield Division Deputy Commissioner of Police D Devaraj said: “We have detained all six members, including an 18-year-old mechanic, and are investigating the incident. We will increase patrolling in the area, especially near schools, playgrounds and parks.”

One of the accused, Vivek, is in judicial custody, while the other has been booked under various sections of the Juvenile Justice Act and IPC.
