Bengaluru: 14-year-old child drowns in stagnant water in under-construction building

A 14-year-old boy drowned in Bengaluru on Sunday after he entered the basement of an under-construction building to check the depth of water accumulated due to heavy rains.

The deceased has been identified as Chandrashekhar alias Chandru (14), a resident of KG Halli, who had gone to an under-construction house in HBR Layout along with his five friends on Sunday afternoon. According to the police, while others were waiting to analyze the depth of the water, Chandru voluntarily asked to go inside despite not knowing how to swim.

After entering a basement filled with rainwater, which had been stuck for almost a week, he tried to ask for help by waving his hand over the water but his friends thought he was joking. When he did not come, the children ran away in fear. Chandru’s parents, after informing the police, pulled out his body with the help of fire brigade officials.

Police officials said the owner of the commercial complex said he had put up hollow blocks and wires to prevent people from entering the premises but the children had gone inside to have fun.

Police said the children are between 10 and 14 years of age and have covered at least 4 km from their residence to get into the building.
