Baby formula shortage worsens, low-income families hit hardest

New data suggests that US baby-formula crunch deepening, particularly affecting states in the South and Southwest.

According to the latest data from market research firm IRI, 23% of powdered baby formula nationally was out of stock in the week ended May 22, compared to 21% during the previous week. in the first week of January and before memorization of the formula produced by Abbott Laboratories, 11% of powdered baby formula was out of stock due to pandemic-related supply-chain constraints and inflation. According to IRI, before the pandemic, the typical out-of-stock range for powdered formula was 5% to 7%.
