Australian cricket great Shane Warne has passed away at the age of 52.

Australian media reported that the man known as Varney and dreaded by a generation of batsmen for nearly 10 years from the 90s died of a suspected heart attack in Koh Samui, Thailand.

Warne’s management released his death statement on Friday evening IST that he had died.

“Shane was found unresponsive in his villa and, despite the best efforts of the medical staff, could not be revived,” read the statement. “The family requests confidentiality at this time and will provide further details in due course.”

Warne took 708 Test wickets in an illustrious career spanning over 15 years. He is the second most successful bowler in Test cricket after Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan, taking 800 wickets. Warne ended his career with 1001 international wickets.

This is the second major defeat for Australian cricket within 24 hours since Rod Marsh died on Friday following a heart attack last week.

Warne’s last tweet on Thursday morning was a tribute to Marsh.

“Sad to hear of Rod Marsh’s passing,” Warne’s tweet read. “He was the hero of our great sport and an inspiration to so many young boys and girls. Rod cared deeply about cricket and gave so much – especially to the players in Australia and England. So much to Ross and family. Sending love. RIP mate.”
