After the Taliban took over the country, which has marked a human rights crisis threatening the freedoms of its residents – namely women – under Islamic fundamentalism, Jolie decided to amplify the voices of refugees.

‘Right now, the people of Afghanistan are losing the ability to communicate and express themselves freely on social media. That’s why I have come to Instagram to share their stories and the voices of those around the world who are fighting for their basic human rights,’ her caption read in the excerpt.

Angelia posted a heartwarming letter from a teenage girl who wrote about living in fear of the Taliban and taking back their rights under their rule, as she said, ‘We all have our dreams’ are over.’

‘We all used to go to work, school before the Taliban came. We all had rights, we were able to defend our rights freely, but when they came, we all fear them, and we feel like all our dreams are over.

‘We feel that our rights have been violated, we cannot get out. Studying at work is a long way off.

In the letter, the teenager kept saying ‘…we have no rights, we all have a dark life, we all lost our freedom and were imprisoned again.’

As of Monday 23 August, a White House official said in a statement that 15 military planes had evacuated 10,900 people from Kabul – including US citizens and interpreters in the country as well as Afghans.

‘From 3:00 AM EDT on 23 August to 3:00 PM EDT on 23 August, a total of about 10,900 people were evacuated from Kabul. This is the result of 15 US military flights (all C-17s) carrying about 6,660 evacuations and 34 coalition flights carrying 4,300 people.’

The initial date for the US military to leave Afghanistan was originally set on May 1 in an agreement signed by former President Donald Trump with the Taliban.

President Joe Biden announced in April that he was extending the deadline to August 31 but according to CNN, several of his advisors have ‘advised against the extension, citing the security situation on the ground.’
