Amid online outrage against leadership, Kerala Congress chief backs Gandhi family

Congress is said to be angry over the party’s poor poll performance in the five-state assembly polls, with Congress’ Kerala unit chief K Sudhakaran on Saturday warning party workers against targeting the party president. Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and AICC general secretary KC Venugopal contemplated the defeat.

After the electoral defeat, Congress workers in Kerala have taken to social media to express their disappointment over the leadership. Several party workers in social media groups were also critical of Venugopal’s role in these elections and demanded his exit as the Congress general secretary in charge of the organisation.

Defending the leadership, Sudhakaran said strict action would be taken against those making indecent remarks on social media. “Character assassination of leaders will not be allowed. “KPCC (Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee) has observed that Sonia, Rahul, Priyanka and Venugopal have been thrown out in the attack. The burden of defeat cannot be imposed on them alone.”

He also said that the party leadership will investigate the reasons for poor electoral performance and take corrective steps.

Though factionalism has been rampant in the state unit of the Congress over the years, most of the top party leaders in the state have remained loyal to the Gandhi family, even as a Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram. Shashi Tharoor Calling for a change in leadership.
