Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has been killed in a CIA drone strike in Afghanistan, US officials told Reuters on Monday, the biggest blow to the militant group since the 2011 killing of its founder Osama bin Laden.
One of the officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Sunday that a drone attack was carried out by the CIA in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid in a statement confirmed and strongly condemned the attack, calling it a violation of “international principles”.
US President Joe Biden will comment on what the White House has described as “a successful campaign against terrorism” at 7:30 pm (2330 GMT) on Monday.
