After government reduces excise duty, states reduce VAT on fuel

After the Center reduced excise duty on fuel on Wednesday, many BJPState-run states announced a further reduction of Rs 7 per liter on Value Added Tax (VAT) on both petrol and diesel. The Center reduced the excise duty on petrol by Rs 5 and on diesel by Rs 10 to take effect from Thursday.

In a tweet late in the evening, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant wrote, ‘Modi Sarkar. A great Diwali gift has been given to all Indians by announcing reduction in excise duty on petrol and diesel… Also, Goa government will reduce the price of diesel by Rs. There will be a decrease. liter and petrol Rs 12 per litre.

Assam announced a reduction of Rs 7 per liter in VAT on both the fuels with immediate effect. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the state government’s decision on Twitter. “Glad to know about the decision of the Central Government to reduce the excise duty on petrol and diesel. In line with the decision of honorable PM @narendramodi, I am happy to announce that the Assam government will also reduce VAT on petrol and diesel by Rs 7 with immediate effect,” he said. On 29 October, Sarma had said that his government was ready to cut its share of taxes on fuel if high rates continued.

A statement from Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s office said that the state government has decided to reduce VAT on petrol/diesel in the state following the central government’s decision to reduce excise duty.


Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb tweeted, “Following the Central Government’s decision to reduce the excise duty on Petrol & Diesel under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji, #Tripura Govt. has also reduced the cost of Petrol & Diesel by 7 After today’s decision, the price of petrol and diesel in Agartala will be Rs 98.33 per liter and Rs 85.63 per liter respectively.

Announcing his government’s decision, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh tweeted, “Heartfelt to PM @narendramodi ji’s decision to reduce excise duty on petrol and diesel as a gift to the people of this country this Diwali. welcome. I am also happy to announce that Govt. Manipur government will also cut VAT on petrol and diesel by Rs 7/- with immediate effect.
