Afghan child handed over to US troops at Kabul airport fence, reunited with family

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the baby needed immediate medical care. Kirby said Friday that the child was treated at a Norwegian hospital and was later reunited with his family. The US Marine Corps said the child was safe at the airport.

“I can confirm that the uniformed service member shown in the video is a Marine with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The child in the video was taken to a medical treatment facility on site and cared for by medical professionals, Marine Corps spokesman Major Jim Stanger said in a statement.

Reports said several Afghan families, desperate to escape the new Taliban regime, were seen throwing their children over the wire fences around Kabul airport.

“This is a true example of the professionalism of the Marines on site, making quick decisions in a dynamic situation in support of evacuation operations,” Stanger confirmed as the child was handed back to his family.

More than 12,700 people have been evacuated from Afghanistan by US forces in the past week, as the Taliban increasingly take control of the nation. On Friday, the US had to halt its evacuation flights for nearly eight hours after processing facilities in Qatar reached capacity.

US President Joe Biden on Friday pledged to bring back all Americans stranded in Afghanistan. Biden is facing criticism for the chaotic scenes at the airport where Afghan citizens try to flee the country. Kabul airport is currently the only way out of Afghanistan.
