Activists against ‘forced disappearance’ detained in Karachi

Karachi: An activist who was protesting outside the Karachi Press Club against the forcible disappearance has been arrested on terrorism charges, according to his family, friends and the police.

Inam Abbasi was arrested under sections 131 (incitement to rebellion, or attempt to deceive a soldier, sailor or airman from his duty) and 153 (provocation with intent to cause riot), a police spokesman said in a statement on Friday. it was done. Pakistan Penal Code, and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) of 1997.

According to the FIR (54/2022) lodged on the complaint of the Sub-Inspector Nayyar Dean of Artillery Maidan police station, Mr. Abbasi, the leader of Sindh Sabha, staged a dharna outside Karachi Press Club on June 22 along with six people. seven other people.

The FIR states that during his speeches, he “used abusive language against the institutions and forces of the country, incited citizens against law enforcers and tried to create fear and anarchy”.

It alleged that Mr. Abbasi and others also provided financial assistance to terror suspects in Sindh.

The police statement said that Mr. Abbasi is absconding in the said case.

Meanwhile, Abbasi’s family and activists said he and others had protested outside the KPC three days ago against the forcible disappearance. He was arrested on his way to his residence in Clifton.

Activists said Mr Abbasi, who was the publisher of a monthly Sindhi language magazine and bookseller, was allegedly taken away a few years ago and returned home after missing a year.

Later, he founded the Sindh Sabha organization and staged a sit-in outside the KPC for several days against the disappearance. He had recently led a march from KPC to Islamabad, but was stopped by law enforcers on the Sindh-Punjab border.
