Abbasi refutes Shahbaz’s claim, says PML-N is not responsible for the 2018 election defeat

ISLAMABAD: Refuting the claims of PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif about the 2018 electoral defeat, senior party leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said that there is nothing wrong in finding the PML-N for the defeat in the general elections.

Speaking to Shahzeb Khanzada, Abbasi proposed the formation of a Truth Commission to investigate what happened in the 2018 elections and the damage it has caused to the country.

Contrary to what Shahbaz said, Abbasi said that the PML-N contested the election after five years at its best and hence, the PML-N is not responsible for the defeat.

“We must learn lessons from the past and move forward if Pakistan has to make some real progress,” Shahbaz had said in his interview.

He also said that politicians throughout Pakistan’s history sought personal interests, allowed themselves to be used and pulled each other’s legs. According to Shahbaz, the blame is shared by all and no one person or institution can be isolated.

However, Abbasi did not openly oppose what Shehbaz said. Commenting on the anti-statements of Shahbaz, Nawaz and their daughter Maryam Nawaz, Abbasi said that politics accepts neither resistance nor reconciliation and instead it is principle. He said that Shahbaz has always supported running the country according to the Constitution.

Commenting on Shahbaz’s remarks about Nawaz’s criticism of the military leadership, Abbasi said that Shahbaz was only meant to interpret Nawaz’s remarks. He said that Shahbaz also mentioned that Imran Khan had gone against the army before coming to power, adding that the PML-N supremo did not criticize the entire army.

He also said that the PML-N will win the upcoming general election if the public is allowed to vote in a free and fair election. “If election theft continues, our country will be in trouble,” he said.

The PML-N leader insisted that rigging does not happen only on election day. Actually it starts before the election.
