Western Ontario Soon you’ll see beer and wine in a corner store — though not quite like Premiere Doug Ford was envisioned in his 2018 campaign promise.

convenience store 7 Eleven says it has acquired a license to sell liquor Liquor and Gambling Commission of Ontario A restaurant serving beer, wine and coolers at one of their stores in Leamington.

The company says that food like chicken wings, potato wedges and pizza are also served in the licensed restaurant.

Several 7-Eleven locations in Alberta have similar licensed restaurants, and the company says the Ontario store is just the start of a wider provincial expansion.

Ford promised Corner Stores to sell beer and wine during his first provincial election campaign, and his government also passed a law to end a 10-year deal with The Beer Store—which expires in 2025. was about to happen – that prevents expansion.

But that law was never put into effect and a cabinet reshuffle followed that saw a new finance minister, who instigated the deal to be scrapped but disappeared.

Since then, the Progressive Conservative government has taken some other alcohol liberalization steps, including allowing restaurants to sell alcohol with food as part of delivery or takeout orders, which was first introduced during the pandemic.
