Jimmy Garoppolo injured his right thumb after losing to San Francisco in Tennessee last week and his condition for the 49ers’ game this week is in doubt.
Garoppolo missed practice on Monday with an injury in the first half of last Thursday’s loss to Tennessee, and coach Kyle Shanahan said the team would have a better idea of his availability for Sunday’s game against Houston later in the week. ,
The 49ers (8-7) currently hold the wild-card spot in the NFC.
It’s a thumb sprain, so I guess you guys know how they are, Shanahan said. “Today didn’t look good. Wasn’t able to throw today and we’ll see how Wednesday goes. Hopefully it gets better.
Shanahan said that Garoppolo suffered a sack injury in the second quarter when he was fielded but remained in the game. Shanahan said he believed the injury played a role in the interception in the third quarter that set up Tennessee’s first touchdown.
Garoppolo was able to lead a game-tying drive, but lost 20–17 to the San Francisco Titans.
If Garoppolo is unable to play, rookie Trey Lance will get a second start of the season. The Niners traded three first-round picks to draft Lance third overall in April, but Lance has played only five snaps in trash time since starting in Week 5 in Arizona.
Lance scored 15 for 29 for 192 yards and ran 16 times for 89 yards with an interception in a loss of 17–10. Lance injured his knee in that game and is showing positive signs in practice.
Shanahan said, “I think this last month of Trey has been his best practice for four weeks in a row. “He had many good days and some bad days, as most people do, but as far as his consistency is concerned, I think this past month has been his best.
