The Rajya Sabha Secretariat said 115 nominations were filed till Wednesday, the last day for filing of nomination papers for the Presidential election to be held on July 18 and 87 of them are yet to be scrutinized.

Scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on Thursday. Sources said that out of the total 115 nominations, 28 were rejected due to non-submission of electoral rolls with the names of the candidates.

The remaining 87 nominations are from 72 candidates which will be scrutinized on Thursday.

Those who filed nomination papers include NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu and United Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha, who is the main candidate.

Besides him, several commoners have also filed their papers for the top constitutional post in the country, including a Mumbai slum dweller, RJD founder Lalu Prasad Yadav, a social activist from Tamil Nadu and a professor from Delhi.

The Election Commission has made it mandatory for the nominees to have at least 50 members of the electoral college as proposers and another 50 as seconders.

The number of proposers and supporters was increased from 10 to 50 before the 11th presidential election in 1997, when the security deposit was increased to Rs 15,000.
