Over 25,000 NS customers out of power amid strong winds, cold globalnews.ca

Temperatures in Nova Scotia have dropped to -22 C – with a wind chill around -37 – as of Saturday morning.

According to Environment Canada, coldest winds could reach -43 in some parts of the province, while maximum wind gusts are forecast to reach between 70 and 80 kilometers per hour.

The weather agency advises to “cover up”. In its extreme cold warning, it said “frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with cold air.”

And, “If it’s too cold for you to be outside, it’s too cold for your pet to be outside.”

Many Nova Scotians were left without power as strong winds battered the area overnight.

More than 27,000 customers are without power as of 10 a.m. Saturday, according to the Nova Scotia Power Outage Map.

The utility said on Twitter Friday that it encourages its customers to be prepared for the forecasted weather.

Earlier this week, Nova Scotia’s utility regulator approved an average 14 percent increase in electricity rates more than two years.

Environment Canada said on Friday an arctic airmass would combine with strong northwesterly winds, creating “severe cold conditions.”

Extreme cold warnings are issued when freezing temperatures and wind chills pose “a significant risk to health such as frostbite and hypothermia”. Some symptoms include “shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness in the fingers and toes, and color changes,” according to the weather agency.

Neighboring New Brunswick was also under extreme cold warnings, where wind chills were forecast to reach as low as -45.

As of 10 a.m. Saturday, a little over 3,700 New Brunswick Power customers are out of power.
