No relief, stir among vegetable growers of Haryana

Haryana government’s Bhavantar Bharai Yojana (BBY) has proved to be a “bitter” pill for bitter gourd growers in the district, who are awaiting compensation for their losses last year.

This scheme was launched to protect the farmers from loss if the prices of certain specified vegetables fall below the fixed rate.

Farmers of Mubarabad village in Gharaunda block are waving from door to door to get compensation as they had to sell their crops at Rs 5-6 per kg against the government price of Rs 13.5 per kg last year during the lockdown. He claims that he has submitted all the relevant documents to the office of the Karnal Market Committee. Joginder Singh, one of the farmers said, “I had sold 80 quintals of bitter gourd at a loss. Even after submitting all the papers in June last year, I still haven’t got the compensation.

Similarly, Amandeep Kaur and Major Singh, who had sold around 45 quintals below the fixed price, are yet to get relief. An official of the market committee said that the documents submitted by the farmers have been sent to the officials at the Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board headquarters.
