‘Needs a player who stays fit’: Sunil Gavaskar on why Rohit is not ideal to replace Kohli as Test captain – India Times English News

The debate over India’s next Test captain is getting heated every day as cricket pundits come up with different suggestions. Virat Kohli’s decision to step down from the captaincy has posed a big challenge for the BCCI as the board needs to find a deserving candidate to take up the responsibility. Rohit Sharma is one of the names in the field but batting great Sunil Gavaskar feels that the Mumbai cricketer may not be the right choice.

In a conversation with SportsTalk, cricketer-turned-commentator Rohit pointed to fitness issues. Gavaskar also said that a player who has worked across all formats should be crowned as the captain.

“The problem with Rohit is that he has fitness issues. So, you need a player who is fit and available for all matches. If you remember, Angelo Mathews of Sri Lanka had the same problem with the hamstring. And with that, when you try to run fast or try to take fast singles, the injury re-emerges,” Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.

“If that happens, you may be forced to make someone else the captain. So it would be better to choose a player who has external injury. But this cycle of injuries with Rohit on a regular basis is why I doubt him. That’s why I think a player who plays in all formats should be made the captain.

Gavaskar said that sometimes the captain and the board officials are not the same but what happened is “unimaginable”.

“No board would want its captain to have his hands tied. Sourav Ganguly, the president himself was a captain, so he didn’t do anything that would trouble the Indian captain. Sure, sometimes there can be some disagreement, but I can’t even imagine something like this happening in Indian cricket,” said Gavaskar.

“Kohli has made a tremendous impact as Test captain since he took over. He had a good team. And when you have a good team, the results will be good. Watch Clive Lloyd’s West Indies. He had four fast bowlers and excellent batsmen. When you have a good team it becomes easier to win matches. Watch Steve Waugh, Ricky Ponting and the attacks they make. Nobody talks about how clever they were,” he concluded.
