Mumbai: Six water towers to fire brigade for congested areas

Mumbai Fire Brigade is going to get six new water tower vehicles to control the fire in densely populated areas and old chawls. These vehicles can reach up to 18 meters (five to six floors).

“Due to the lot of wooden structures in the slums, the fire spreads rapidly and the narrow streets make it difficult for fire engines to reach. Water towers will be helpful as they can sprinkling water from above even from a distance,” said a senior BMC official. BMC is going to spend Rs 32.12 crore on this project.

The purchase proposal will be presented in the Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday. Once the resolution is passed, the vehicles are expected to be delivered in 2-4 months. The fire department has more than 270 vehicles, out of which 11 fire engines will be removed in a phased manner.
