Karachi: The Karachi administration has completely failed to ensure the sale of milk at the official rates as the commodity is being sold at Rs 140 per liter in the metropolis against the government rate of Rs 110.

The city administration has now fixed the retail price of milk at Rs 120 per liter, while the price for dairy farmers has been fixed at Rs 105 per litre.

According to a notification issued by Karachi Commissioner Iqbal Memon, the wholesale price of the commodity has been fixed at Rs 110 per litre.

When asked why they were not following the government rate, a shopkeeper said that they were forced to sell the milk at a higher price as the dairy farmers refused to provide the item at the official rates.

Earlier, the commissioner had presided over the meeting and reviewed the prices of milk.

The city administration also decided that it would take legal action against violators of the government rates and review milk prices every three months.

The meeting was attended by Jawad Muzaffar, Additional Commissioner Karachi, all Deputy Commissioners, representatives of Dairy Farmers Association, Wholesalers Association and Retailers Association, Bureau of Supply and Price Livestock Department, Food Authority and others.

The participants of the meeting hashed out the report of a review committee constituted under the Deputy Commissioner of Malir.

The Karachi Commissioner said that the new rates of milk have been fixed in the light of the report, in which the cost of production of milk has been reviewed in consultation with farmers, wholesalers and retailers.
