Gujarat ATS arrests BSF jawans for spying for Pakistan

The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) on Monday arrested a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan posted in Kutch Bhuj on charges of “committing espionage activities for Pakistan”.

ATS officials said that the accused Sajjad, a resident of Sarula village of Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, is posted in ‘A’ company of 74th Battalion of BSF in Kutch Gandhidham. According to the ATS, Sajjad had joined the BSF in 2012 as a constable.

A team of Gujarat ATS on Monday arrested Sajjad from the BSF headquarters in Kutch Bhuj for allegedly sending secret information to a handler in Pakistan in exchange for money. ATS officials said Sajjad was “transmitting information through WhatsApp messages”.

A statement issued by Gujarat ATS said, “We have received inputs from reliable sources that a jawan posted in 74th Battalion of BSF in Kutch Gandhidham is involved in sending confidential and sensitive information of BSF to the neighboring country through his cell phone. . The accused Sajjad was using the mobile number registered in his Aadhar card. He also holds a passport registered from Jammu, using which he traveled to Pakistan on December 1, 2011 from Attari railway station on the Samjhauta Express. Sajjad lived in Pakistan for a period of 46 days from December 1, 2011 to January 15, 2012.

It further said, “Further investigation revealed that Sajjad was using another SIM card and Call Detail Record (CDR) and the IMEI number of his handset was checked which revealed that Sajjad had entered 14 and 15 The third SIM card was used on January 2021. The third SIM was registered in Tripura in the name of one Satyapal Ghosh. The CDR of the third SIM was checked and it was found that this number was activated on November 7, 2020. Initially Two calls were made to this SIM from the mobile network company and it was active on 7th, 8th and 9th November 2020. The SIM card was then inactive from November 10th, 2020 to December 25th, 2020. After that on December 25th, 2020, the SIM was reactivated. and received an SMS with OTP for WhatsApp registration on January 15, 2021 at around 12:38 PM. This SIM card was then deactivated.”

The ATS said that Sajjad had allegedly received money through the accounts of his brother Wajid and friend Iqbal Rashid.

“Investigation has revealed that the OTP received on his phone was sent by the accused to Pakistan to register WhatsApp on the particular SIM. Currently WhatsApp is active on the particular SIM and it is being used by someone in Pakistan who was in touch with Sajjad. The accused Sajjad had received money from the accounts of his brother Wajid and friend Iqbal Rashid. The accused was arrested from the BSF station headquarters in Kutch Bhuj and on search found two mobile phones with attached SIM cards and two spare SIM cards from his possession. Further investigation is on,” the statement further said.
