ATHENS: Residents were evacuated on Saturday as a wildfire that began in the mountainous forests of the eastern Aegean island of Lesbos threatened properties at the beach resort of Vatera.
Dense smoke spread by strong winds can be seen in the area. An fleeing resident told state TV ERT that his house had caught fire.
“We are struggling to save the homes,” the mayor of western Lesbos Taxiarchis Veros told the broadcaster.
