It is unclear what exactly caused Hamlin’s heart attack. One possibility is a phenomenon known as “comatio cordis”.
“Comotio cordis is an incredibly rare event,” Dr. William Knight, a professor in the department of emergency medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, said Thursday. “It is a diagnosis of exclusion,” meaning that other conditions have to be ruled out before it can be definitively determined.
“It’s on the list for consideration,” said Knight, who is part of a group of physicians treating Hamlin.
Normally, the heart pumps oxygen-rich blood throughout the body approximately every second. There is a rhythm to the process, keeping the blood flowing at a healthy pace. Every time the heart beats, there is a brief moment – less than a fifth of a second – that makes it vulnerable to the force of a projectile that can cause chaotic and potentially fatal heart rhythms.
Experts say that a blow to the chest in the right place at this very moment can put an otherwise healthy person into cardiac arrest. The electrical system of the heart becomes damaged, and the rhythm of the heartbeat becomes disorganized.
Hamlin’s doctors say it is too early to determine whether he can return to professional football. There is a concern that Hamelin may have inhaled fluid or blood, which could potentially cause problems with lung function.
Upon regaining consciousness, the 24-year-old Hamlin asked: “Have we won?” his doctors said on Thursday.
“The answer is yes,” Dr. Timothy Pritts, division chief of general surgery at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, tells Hamlin. “You have won the game of life.”
