The Tokyo Olympian said she woke up “completely lost” with her team manager and doctor, missing the four- to six-hour window time during the event.

The 22-year-old found “dozens of bruises” on her body after a trip home the next day and said she was forced to share her experience because “these situations happen tragically at times.”

“I’m still scared to think about the unknown of that night,” she wrote in her social media post. “I’m still, in a way, embarrassed by what happened, and I feel like I always will be… but I won’t let this event define me.”

The 2019 Pan American silver medalist won a bronze medal as part of Canada’s 4x200m relay team at the Swimming World Championships in Budapest, which ended on June 25.
