Yonkers restaurant to receive $5K reward from Grubhub for its part in Bronx hostage rescue

BRONX, New York (WABC) – A restaurant in Yonkers is set to receive a big reward from delivery food service Grubhub, following a big-time decision that helped save the life of a young woman held hostage in the Bronx.

They say that no good deed comes without punishment, but that is not the case at Chipper Truck Cafe. Its owners are being rewarded with a $5,000 reward from food delivery service Grubhub.

“They thanked us for what we did and thank you for paying attention to the notes, and they wanted to give us a reward for their appreciation,” said restaurant owner Alice Bermejo.

talked to the owners Eyewitness News Reporter Sonia Rincon Tuesday Night About the infamous note came to the restaurant on Sunday morning. Along with the order were instructions “please call the police” sent by a 24-year-old woman in a Bronx apartment, which was placed against her will.

The restaurant’s video shows the moment Bermejo’s daughter and another worker witness the woman’s desperate plea.

Police were called and a short time later, 32-year-old Chemoy Royal was arrested.

He is facing charges of rape, unlawful imprisonment and other counts.

She has also been linked to an unrelated sexual assault attempt a few days ago.

The reward was the last thing on his mind, Bermejo says on Sunday.

“It’s shocking to us, and we’re very grateful that he was caught and the girl is fine,” Bermejo said.

Money will come in handy. Like most restaurants, things weren’t so sticky for the cafe during the pandemic. The restaurant had to let its delivery driver cut costs.

Owners turned to services like Uber Eats and DoorDash, and a few months ago, Grubhub.

“Right now my head is in a fog, so I don’t know, but we can certainly use it, whatever happened during the pandemic, it will definitely go to good use,” Bermejo said.

The 32-year-old suspect is being held on a $200,000 bond.

Meanwhile, Yash keeps on coming. Yonkers City Council also plans to honor the cafe’s owners.
