Uttar Pradesh: Two arrested for ‘assault’ on Dalit food distribution officer

Days after a 25-year-old Dalit food delivery executive was allegedly thrashed by a group of customers, the Lucknow police booked two people for “disturbing the peace” and arrested them on Tuesday.

Delivery executive Vineet Kumar Rawat alleged that the customer Ajay Singh Police said the (40) had refused to take food from his own hands after learning that he belonged to the Dalit community and also made casteist remarks against him. He said that he had allegedly thrashed her along with other people present in his house at that time.

The incident happened on Saturday evening when Rawat had gone to place orders in the Ashiana area. Rawat is employed by food aggregator Zomato.

ACP (Cantonment) Dr Archana Singh said, “Police has invoked Section 151 of CrPC against Ajay and his servant Vivek Shukla (25).” Ajay’s name was with 13 others FIR Rawat filed on Saturday. Apart from Ajay, an FIR has been registered against one Abhay Singh and 12 other unidentified people. The accused were booked under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and the SC/ST Act.

Police said the two were arrested after the medical examination report of Rawat was confirmed.
