UP Elections 2022: Akhilesh and Jayant meet over seat-sharing; RLD may get 35 seats

Samajwadi Party (SP) President Akhilesh Yadav met his alliance partner Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Choudhary in Lucknow on Thursday and discussed the seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming UP assembly elections.

Sources in both the parties said that the RLD is likely to get around 35 seats in western UP.

The SP said the seat-sharing formula would be finalized after another discussion between the leaders. After the meeting, Yadav and Choudhary shared pictures from the meeting on Twitter. Yadav wrote, “Conversation with Mr. Jayant Choudhary about the future of UP.” Similarly, Choudhary tweeted, “Strengthening our ties for the development of Uttar Pradesh!”

Speaking about the final seat deal, SP spokesperson Rajendra Choudhary said, “The meeting was to discuss seat sharing. There will be another round of meeting between the two leaders and after that we will announce the seat sharing formula.

The RLD had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections as part of the “Mahagathbandhan” of SP and BSP. RLD had to face defeat in all three seats- Baghpat, Mathura and Muzaffarnagar.

Jayant was appointed the national president of the RLD after his father and former Union minister, Ajit Singh (82), died of complications from COVID in May.

Meanwhile, the SP spokesperson said that Akhilesh will visit Gonda on Friday and inaugurate the statue of late SP leader and former minister Pandit Singh. “There is no rally or Travel on Wednesday. Covid protocol will be followed,” he said.
