With the commencement of recruitment of soldiers under the Agneepath scheme, monetary compensation to Agniveers in case of disability or death has come down as they will get much less than regular soldiers.

comparative analysis

Agniveer

  • Disability: A lump sum payment will be given on the basis of his/her disability. It will range from Rs 44 lakh for 100% disability to Rs 15 lakh for 50% or less disability.
  • Death: His family will get Rs 1.04 crore as compensation, full salary for a period of up to four years (effective from the date of death) in addition to the service fund fund.

soldier

  • Disability: He is entitled to pension in addition to regular medical facility and additional disability pension till he survives.
  • Death: A lump sum compensation of insurance in addition to family pension is given to their widow or parents till their survival. Children get fully funded free education till graduation.

The difference in compensation has been flagged off to top military officials. The fiscal burden in bridging the monetary gap between Agniveer and Solder will not be much.

While the government is set to reform, the issue of disability to an Agniveer and compensation to his family in case of death is an important matter. Sources say that this needs to be resolved as both will be called to face the enemy in adversity.

In case of disability, an Agniveer – who will be recruited for four years – will get a lump sum payment based on his disability. It will vary from Rs 44 lakh for 100% disability to Rs 15 lakh (lowest lump sum payment) for 50 percent or less disability. He will also get salary for the unserved period of up to four years (effective from the date of disability) and a partly self-contributory ‘Service Fund’ fund of Rs 11.76 lakh.

Compare this to a regular soldier who becomes disabled. He is entitled to pension in addition to regular medical facility and additional disability pension till he survives.

There exists a huge difference in compensation in case of death in action. The family of serving Agniveer will get Rs 1.04 crore as compensation in addition to the service fund fund, full salary (effective from the date of death) for a period of up to four years. If a soldier is killed in action, the widow or parent is entitled to a family pension till she survives, in addition to a lump sum compensation of insurance.
