Russia and Ukraine blamed each other for shelling a big nuclear plant in southeastern Ukraine currently under Russian control.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces fired twice at the facility, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, Europe’s largest.
The shelling amounted to “an open, brazen crime, an act of terror,” Zelenskyy said. He also called for sanctions against the Russian nuclear industry.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense blamed Kyiv for three artillery strikes hitting the area of the plant, saying that it carried out “acts of nuclear terrorism.”
Earlier this week, Rafael Grossi, the head of the U.N.’s International Atomic Energy Agency, told the AP that the plant was “completely out of control” and that the situation was becoming more unstable every day. He issued a plea to Moscow and Kyiv to urgently allow experts to visit the plant and stabilize the situation.
