Thousands of Israelis protest Netanyahu’s judicial reform plans – National | globalnews.ca

Thousands of Israelis gathered on Saturday for a weekly demonstration against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government’s proposed judicial overhauls that opponents say threaten of israel democratic value.

Protesters marched at two locations in the central coastal city Tel Aviv, waved flags and raised slogans against the Justice Minister. A banner carried by a doctor at a Tel Aviv protest read, “Doctors are fighting for the lives of democracy.”

The protests are the fifth against the new government, a coalition of ultra-conservative and far-right nationalist parties that took office in December.

The government introduced proposals to weaken the Supreme Court by giving Parliament the power to overturn court decisions by a simple majority. It also seeks to give Parliament control over the appointment of judges and curtail the independence of legal advisors.
