Knoxville, TN – In Knoxville, Tennessee as it has been a wild environment and Notre Dame Square Off at the NCAA Tournament, The Super Regional began on Friday night, with both teams tied in the first game. It was the fireworks of the Irish batsmen and the wrath of the Walls squad that had already caused controversy in Knoxville.
In the bottom 5th inning, Notre Dame led 8–2, Tennessee outfielder Drew Gilbert was at bat, but what was to come next could change the dynamics of Saturday’s rematch. After the home plate umpire called for a strike, Gilbert looked back and told the umpire that the call was a ‘f—ing terrible’ according to a video of the incident. I’m no lip-reader and can’t tell from my vantage of the play, but the video takes a while to watch.
After the umpire promptly tossed Gilbert, the Tennessee pitching coach came out of the dugout and shared his thoughts with the home plate umpire, which also led to his dismissal. according to NCAA rulesBoth Gilbert and Anderson will have to miss Saturday’s game due to the ejection.
