Telecom Fiber Lines the Source of a North Texas Homeowner’s Plumbing Problems

Heath, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – Heath’s Michael Mahan says it suddenly became apparent there was a problem with his pipe on Christmas Eve.

“Everything is backing up the rain, the water is an inch deep, nothing is flowing, nothing is going down,” he said.

Plumbers got to work, suspecting that a tree root was blocking a line.

“What have we found,” he said, searching for the right words. “I don’t think they could do it if they tried.”

Two fiber optic lines, one belonging to AT&T, the other to SuddenLink, were cutting off its sewage connection.

“I couldn’t believe it. They both hit dead center in the middle of it,” said Mahan.

He remembers AT&T laying down a line two and a half years ago and SuddenLink sometime later.

At the time, he was unmarried, and even a partially blocked pipe seems to have taken care of business.

Today he is married with his wife, son and mother who lives with him.

“We put a lot of pressure on the system and that’s when we came to know about the problem,” Mahan said.

Since Christmas, he has been trying to solve the issue.

“Who do you blame? Like we don’t care. All we want is our toilets to flush,” he said.

Mahan says no plumbers wanted to risk cutting AT&T or SuddenLink’s lines and, as of Thursday, neither company had shown up.

So, CBS 11 reaches both.

The next morning, an AT&T crew was at his front door.

By noon, a sudden link contractor had also arrived.

“When they came this morning, I was like, ‘Thanks! said the great.

In a statement to CBS 11, AT&T wrote:

“As we work to expand and expand our fiber network to deliver ultra-high speeds to communities, we aim to minimize the impact on residents as much as possible. We instruct our contractors to follow all necessary procedures for installing utilities before commencing work. We are working with our contractor to repair and restore any impacts from our work.”

By sunset, the damage was repaired by company employees.

And great, after some delay, he finally got the Christmas present he came after.

“All I want for Christmas is my toilet flush,” she said with a laugh.
