Sri Lanka vs Australia: Glenn Maxwell likely to end Test hiatus after 5 years

Glen Maxwell, whose last Test came five years ago, could face Sri Lanka in Galle for the first Test after being included in the squad. Glenn Maxwell has been included in the Australian Test squad in place of Travis Head, who suffered a hamstring strain during the ODI series against the island nation.

Maxwell’s last Test match was against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2017. If he is selected in the playing XI for the match starting next Wednesday, it will be the 33-year-old’s first first-class match since 2019.

Interestingly, all seven of Maxwell’s Test matches have come in the subcontinent. His highest score of 104 came against India in Ranchi.

“We know Glenn has had some red-ball success in these types of situations and we are looking forward to him coming back and playing a good block of cricket through T20 and One Day cricket. If he turns off the lights or does someone else particularly well, there are always going to be opportunities,” Bailey said.

Earlier, the 33-year-old all-rounder has questioned the selectors after being ruled out of the Sri Lanka series.

Maxwell told cricket.com.au earlier this month, “I know it’s specific to my skills and the way I bowl slow, especially in these conditions, it can impress some (selectors). could.” But I think the way he has shown faith in his current team is fantastic, he was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

“It’s good that the door isn’t closed, but I also thought it was good that they showed faith in that squad.”
