Rare meeting of Palestinian President and Hamas chief

Algiers: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh met in public for the first time in five years on the sidelines of the Algerian independence anniversary celebrations.
Algeria’s state broadcaster reported late Tuesday that representatives of the Palestinian Authority and the Islamic Hamas movement also attended the meeting, which it called “historic”.
