Petition in Supreme Court regarding delay in appointment of HC judges

New Delhi, 25 October

A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against the Justice Secretary for failing to appoint 11 advocates/judicial officers as judges of the High Courts by the collegium while the collegium approved them. Names repeated.

The Petitioner Advocates Association, Bengaluru pointed out that the Center sitting on the names repeated by the collegium went against the apex court’s 2019 order in PLR Projects Pvt Ltd vs Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd and others, which the CJI-led collegium had once said. One name was repeated for appointment as judge, the appointment should be made within three-four weeks.

Meanwhile, the Center today notified the appointment of one judge each to Allahabad HC and Rajasthan HC. – tns
