‘Outhouse Race’ participants compete for the Golden Plunger prize in North Okanagan – Okanagan | globalnews.ca

It turns out that you can race in almost anything. Of course there are car races, snowboard races, marathons and more, but there is one unusual race that happens once a year in the North Okanagan.

For the second year in a row, participants have taken up the challenge of building an aerodynamic outhouse to raise money for a good cause.

“Where else have you heard of an Outhouse Race? This is a unique event,” said Outhouse Race Director Darren Schmidt.

The unique racing event doubles as a fundraiser for the Monashee Trail Society.

“We are looking for awareness for our group, we are a non-profit society focused on trail initiatives in the Lumbee area,” Schmidt said.

10 teams of three are tasked with not only being the fastest but also tapping into their creativity and building the most unique three-way outhouse.

“This is a great community event. We were really challenged by the fire department, and we thought it would be fun,” said RCMP member Shawn Miranda.

“we designed [the outhouse] Nice and light and we’re chasing down the bad guys, so working on our cardio and that’s our strategy.

Both RCMP members and members of the Lumbee and District Fire Department compete in full uniform.

“Today I’m the captain of one of our two outhouse race teams and I’m helping crew one of them,” said Geoff Bradley, Lumby and District Fire Department.

“We’ve got a style, we’ve got some good power to the outhouse and I think we’ve kept it nice and aerodynamic, so we’re hoping that’s a winning combo today.”
